Create Artwork on Mac or Windows software?
Now before I get started on this subject, I have to say that I’m a PC person.
Now we have that out the way I can tell why I love Macs!
When creating artwork or designing a new company logo, most people use Macs. What are the reasons I hear you ask and why? Well Macs have a history with software such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. These age old and rock solid pieces of software have been used for graphic design for so long that they have become the “go to”. The reason is because of the length of time they have had to perfect the software.
Windows has many alternatives, some of which are quite good. Are they as good as the Mac variations?
Is Windows graphic software and good?
Personally, I find CorelDRAW the best Windows graphic software. The layout is pretty good and level of customization is good too. It can do most things Photoshop/Illustrator can do and some things it can’t but still it’s not as well known. The comparison to Photoshop though isn’t a fair one as Photoshop is a Raster editor/creator and CorelDRAW is a Vector editor/creator. Raster images are dealt in pixels and Vector images are dealt in maths and equations. Adobe Illustrator is the Vector editor so really it should be compared to that.
Both companies have full suits that can do both Raster and Vector formats but they are both very expensive.
Photoshop or Illustrator?
The main difference is Photoshop is really meant for photo manipulation. Illustrator is designed for logo and artwork creation. Vectors can be scaled to suit the purpose without loss of quality. Raster images in the other hand can only be scaled as far as the pixel information will allow before the quality goes. A Jpeg is actually a Raster image, or a compressed variation of one.
Wonder why your image gets pixelated when you expand it too far? That’s because you have expanded the raster image past it’s maximum as set by the pixel data. If that image was made in a vector format, you could expand it almost as far as you wanted without quality loss.
Creating images for websites though is a two part process, first you need to create the master image in Mac or Windows software. Then you have to use a compressed version, such as a Jpeg or Png, on the website so everyone can see it.
Illustrator and Photoshop have very difficult learning curves, each piece has a lot of different elements to learn. It can take years to master each one and that’s time most people don’t have. CorelDRAW is also a very difficult software to master and is completely different to the prior.
That’s why we use both types of software, we know that not everyone has a Mac and can’t use Ai or PS files. We make sure you can use the master files we create for you unlike a lot of companies. Some companies will only give you the compressed website image and keep the masters, it means you are being held to ransom for your artworks future use. We don’t like that, you pay us to create artwork for you, it’s your to keep at the end, all version.
